⋄ Senior Observability Technical Lead @ Canonical

📅 2026-now | 📍 (remote), 🇩🇪 Germany

Technical lead of Canonical’s Observability team and interim manager of its Tracing and profiling subteam. Set the team’s technical direction, priorities and roadmap, and work with senior management on its long-term strategy.

Main accomplishments:

  • LTS release: owned Canonical Observability’s first LTS release end to end, from scoping to delivery: four months, 884 PRs, and coordination with 8 stakeholders across other departments.
  • Roadmap and direction: ran the team’s roadmap planning, introducing a bottom-up process built on individual investigations and demos, which the team praised for its clarity and transparency; mentor colleagues in weekly 1-on-1s.
  • External impact: led all engagement with OWASP, getting a dedicated logging library I built (with security team sign-off) cited in the OWASP Logging Vocabulary cheat sheet; co-authored the Juju page in the upstream Mimir documentation.

⋄ Observability Technical Lead @ Canonical

Stepped into a leadership role within the same team, mentoring junior colleagues and taking ownership of both technical components and stakeholder interactions on behalf of the team.

Main accomplishments:

  • Ownership and team alignment: took projects from idea to delivery, from technical efforts such as the load testing story to cross-team coordination, while moderating all of the team’s meetings (planning, retrospectives, syncs) and keeping the team focused through periodic “roadmap state” reviews.
  • Delivery excellence: consistently delivered more than 50% of our 5-people team’s total work, averaging 250% more “planned days of work” being completed per sprint compared to other people on the team.
  • Security posture: directed the team discourse on security and SSDLC processes, performing preventive CVE scanning and spearheading the company guidelines on vulnerability response.

⋄ Software Engineer @ Canonical

Part of the Observability team at Canonical, developing a resilient and scalable cloud-native monitoring stack, leveraging best-in-class open-source software, allowing for a seamless end-user experience and smooth admin operations. Worked hands-on with popular Observability software, with a strong focus on integrating them into a cohesive, production-ready stack.

Main accomplishments:

  • Secure software supply chain: led the packaging of upstream Observability software as rocks, delivering minimal, reproducible and regularly patched container images for the whole stack.
  • CI/CD infrastructure: single-handedly designed and implemented department-wide automations, setting new standards of quality for our software and engineering processes.
  • Testing architecture: re-designed our testing approach with feature-first semantics and parallelization, increasing the speed of our testing suites by 225%.

Part of the CERN IT Monitoring team, operating both internally over CERN’s data center operations and externally over the WLCG (Worldwide LHC Computing Grid), with Agile and DevOps methodologies.

Main accomplishments:

  • IT Department monitoring: Designed, developed and maintained a large-scale high-availability infrastructure to take care of the entire monitoring data pipeline, including data ingestion, cleaning, aggregation, visualization and alerting.
  • Contributed to open-source projects while investigating and researching new technologies to further improve the current infrastructure.

Luca Bello is a Senior Observability Technical Lead at Canonical, where he contributes to the direction of the team behind the open-source Canonical Observability Stack (COS) on Juju.

He started his career at CERN, monitoring large-scale distributed systems such as international computing grids and supporting the IT department’s data science needs, and has worked in Observability ever since.
